Free tools for anyone shipping through Kerala

Vizhinjam opened to full EXIM cargo in August 2026, and every exporter between Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore now has a port decision to make. These tools answer the questions that come first — whether you are export ready at all, which port, which mode, what it will cost to ship, and what an import really lands at — using Kerala road distances, sailing data and local charges rather than a global average.

Live tools

Five of them. All work on a phone and none of them needs an account. The scorecard is the only one that asks for an email, and only for the action plan at the end — your score, your band and your blockers are free.

Where to start

Exporting? Settle the mode first with air vs sea, then use the port selector for the gateway and the cost estimator for the number you'll quote. Importing? Go straight to the landed cost calculator — it's the only one of the four that prices duty and IGST. The export tools share the same road distances and sailing data, so they won't contradict each other in front of your buyer.

Need the firm number instead of the estimate?

The tools give you an honest indicative range. For a rate you can put in a contract — with a named carrier, a sailing date and our all-in charges — send us the shipment and we'll come back the same working day.

In development

Next in the queue. Tell us which one you'd use and it moves up the list.

Export documentation checklist Every document your commodity and destination need, generated as a checklist you can hand to your CHA.
Demurrage & detention calculator Work out what the clock is costing you at Cochin or Vizhinjam before the invoice lands.
HS code & duty lookup Kerala commodities — cashew, spices, coir, marine, rubber — with the incentives that apply.
Port proximity & site selection For companies choosing where to build: distance, land availability and connectivity around both ports.
Sailing schedule board Departures from Kochi and Vizhinjam in one place, refreshed weekly.
CBM & container load planner Check whether your cartons fit a 20ft, a 40ft, or belong in LCL.

Why we built these

Kerala Ports has spent years moving cargo by air, land and water across the state, and the same handful of questions come up on nearly every first call: should I ship from Vizhinjam or Cochin now, is it worth flying instead, what will this actually cost me, and what will this import land at. All of them are answerable with information we already hold — road distances, sailing patterns, terminal handling charges, CHA fees — but neither is answerable from a directory page or a contact form.

So we put the answers behind a form you fill in yourself. Nothing is gated before you see a result — the scorecard asks for an email only once your score and blockers are already on screen, and the other four ask for nothing at all. If the numbers help and you never call us, that is a fine outcome; if they help and you do call, you will arrive knowing roughly what you should be paying, which makes the conversation shorter for both of us.

What the tools are honest about

They are indicative, and they say so on every result. Ocean freight moves week to week and is quoted as a band rather than a single figure. Local charges are steadier and closer to exact. Anything that depends on facts the tool cannot know — GST, demurrage and detention, destination charges, import duty, DAP and DDP terms — is deliberately left out rather than guessed at, because a wrong number in those lines would undermine the ones that are right.

Every figure carries a reviewed date. When the underlying rates change, the date changes with them.

Who these are for

Common questions

Do I need to register or give an email address?
You never need an account. Four of the five tools run entirely in your browser and return the complete result without asking for anything. The export readiness scorecard is the one exception: your score, your band, your blockers and your gaps are all free, but the personalised action plan is emailed to you, so that last step asks for your details.
How accurate are the numbers?
Local charges — terminal handling, customs clearance, documentation, haulage — are close to exact and drawn from recent invoices. Ocean freight is shown as a researched market band, not a live carrier rate, because rates move weekly and no free tool can quote a real contract price. Treat the output as a well-informed estimate for budgeting and comparison, and get a firm quote before committing.
Which tool should I start with?
If you are importing, only one applies — the landed cost calculator. If you have not exported before, start with the readiness scorecard: there is no point pricing a shipment you cannot legally file. Once you are ready, the order is mode, then gateway, then price — air vs sea if flying is even a possibility, then the port selector, then the cost estimator for the figure you will quote.
Can I share a result with a colleague or buyer?
Yes. Each tool generates a link that restores the full result, so you can paste it into an email or WhatsApp and the other person sees exactly what you saw. The cost estimator and landed cost breakdowns also print cleanly as costing sheets.
How often is the data updated?
Ocean freight bands and haulage rates are reviewed quarterly, the exchange rate monthly, and terminal and customs charges twice a year. The reviewed date shown on each tool tells you when it was last touched.
Are more tools coming?
Yes — an export documentation checklist, a demurrage and detention calculator, an HS code and duty lookup for Kerala commodities, and a sailing schedule board are all in the queue. If one of those would be useful to you now, message us and it moves up the list.

Disclaimer. These tools provide indicative estimates for planning purposes only, based on publicly available information and our own operating experience, reviewed September 2026. They are not a quotation, and no commercial commitment arises from their output. Freight rates, statutory charges and port tariffs change without notice.
