Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has achieved a significant milestone by handling 108,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in March 2025. This accomplishment comes just four months after the port commenced commercial operations in December 2024.

The rapid growth positions Vizhinjam as a formidable competitor to established transshipment hubs like Colombo and Singapore. Analysts anticipate that more international shipping companies will favor Vizhinjam over Colombo in the future.

Currently, Vizhinjam operates solely as a transshipment hub, facilitating the transfer of goods between vessels without inland transportation. The initiation of domestic cargo movement is pending the completion of customs and immigration facilities, as well as road connectivity. Notably, major companies such as Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd (JMBPL), and Transworld have established offices in Vizhinjam, underscoring the port’s growing prominence in the maritime industry.
