Families close to the Thiruvananthapuram airport will be strongly instructed not to sell meat in order to lower the risk of bird strikes on aircraft. By renting out a portion of the residents’ homes, those from outside are selling meat. Such homes should no longer be rented out, according to a directive by the municipality authorities. Since the selling of meat is prohibited by a court order, the police will also step in if they witness any unlawful transactions. The decision has been made to build apartments and move the landless residents who reside on the area’s periphery.

Some of them also operate meat businesses and rent out their homes. In light of this, 96 families are being moved, including the library and anganwadi in the Vallakadavu ward close to the airport. Eight apartments on 12 blocks across from St. Xavier’s Church are being built. Uralungal Labor Contractors Cooperative Society is doing the construction.

To avoid bird annoyance, a meat waste processing plant was previously established. The Union Environment Ministry produced a thorough plan for this, but they were not granted authorization. When it became apparent that the factory would not be constructed, the families were moved.

The increase in bird nuisance was discovered to be caused by the garbage here and the meat and poultry stores that operate close to the airport. In light of the growing number of incidents involving birds striking airplanes during takeoff and landing, they are being moved with the promise that meat sales would not be permitted in the region.

According to predictions from the central government, 124 planes and birds collided at the airport between 2018 and 2023. Pilots, however, record a far greater number of cases. The values at the middle include just severe bird strikes. A bird struck a landing plane last month, forcing the cancellation of a flight.

Flight WY 211, with 150 passengers, was struck by the hawk from Muscat. When the hawk struck the engine, the plane suffered severe damage, but the pilot’s prompt action prevented a huge catastrophe. Later, the crushed hawk was discovered trapped inside the engine. After the technical issue was resolved, the aircraft was subsequently taken into service. As the issue grew more severe, steps were taken to prevent bird strikes. According to ward councilor Shajitha Nassar, the corporation is working to finish the apartments by the end of the year so that rehabilitation may begin.
