The Kerala Swatantra Matsyathozhilali Federation is urging on the port authorities of Vizhinjam to reveal the specifics of the cargo and the containers that were loaded on the lost ship, MSC ELSA 3.
According to Jackson Pollayil, president of the Federation, there have been multiple reports about the shipment, which are making coastal residents and fishing villages anxious. According to him, the port and customs officials need to give a detailed explanation and make it clear whether bad weather or technical difficulties caused the ship to sink.
Whatever the reason, any governmental oversights should be thoroughly investigated, according to Pollayil. Although authorities had the information, the federation voiced concern about the lack of thorough reports on the products handled at the port. “The environmental effects of possible leaks, including chemicals like calcium carbide and fuel from the vessel, should be assessed by an expert,” he said.
“The specific contents of these containers are known to the port management and customs officials at Vizhinjam Port. Therefore, the managing director of Vizhinjam International Port needs to allay public fears,” Pollayil stated. In order to prevent fishing-related accidents, HHe called on the ministry of shipping to erect buoys identifying the wreckage site and stated that compensation should be provided to the impacted fishermen after the sinking.
