After years of declining airline operations and growing losses, Kannur International Airport is finally exhibiting encouraging indications of recovery. In the current fiscal year, the airport has seen remarkable increases in both passenger volume and income, indicating a positive turn around.
Passenger traffic has increased by 93% and revenue has increased by 27% over the previous fiscal year. Kannur Airport handled 13.4 lakh passengers and conducted 11,430 flights in the fiscal year 2024–2025. Revenue at the airport increased from Rs 101 crore in 2023–2024 to Rs 195 crore.
Additionally encouraging are the new fiscal year’s April and May numbers. This April, there were 39% more passengers than there were in April of previous year. KIACL (Kannur International Airport Ltd) made Rs 41 crore in income in the first two months alone. The airport hopes to generate Rs 250 crore in income and handle 2 million passengers in fiscal year 2025–2026.
Both domestic and foreign sectors have seen the introduction of new services. Gulf sector connectivity has been improved, with a particular emphasis on the North Malabar expat population. New flights to New Delhi, Fujairah, Muscat, and Dammam have been launched by Indigo Airlines. There are still talks going on with other airlines about starting more routes. With the addition of new flights, KIACL officials anticipate substantial gains in both passenger traffic and income.
