Ahead of the Vizhinjam International Seaport’s planned official inauguration on May 2, an organizing committee has been established, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan serving as its principal patron. The head of the organizing committee is Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan, and the patrons are Ministers V. Sivankutty, Saji Cherian, and G.R. Anil. On May 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially open the harbor.
A conference was called to examine the inauguration ceremony preparations and make it a significant event in the State’s history, according to Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan. The majority of the Vizhinjam port’s phase one construction was finished and turned over in December. The port saw more ships berthing than anticipated during the actual three-month trial run period.
Approximately 265 ships have made port calls thus far, and the port can accommodate roughly 5.5 lakh cargo. The State government has been working on two main projects: road and railway access to the port. As part of the rail connectivity project, a 9.2 km tunnel has been proposed to connect the 10.7 km of railway. According to the Minister, work will soon start after the Railway Ministry approved the detailed project report that Konkan Railway had completed.
