Cochin Port has reported a 4% increase in cargo traffic for the financial year 2024-25, marking a steady growth trajectory amid global trade uncertainties and regional competition.

According to official data released by the port authority, the total cargo handled stood at approximately 34.1 million tonnes during the fiscal year, compared to 32.8 million tonnes in financial year 2024. This growth is attributed to a surge in container traffic, increased coastal shipping activity, and improved efficiency in port operations.

Container traffic witnessed a notable upswing, with the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam playing a key role in attracting transshipment cargo. Enhanced infrastructure, streamlined customs procedures, and improved hinterland connectivity have further boosted the port’s operational performance.

The port also saw significant movement in liquid bulk cargo, particularly petroleum products, which contributed to the positive overall growth. Coastal shipping—an area the port has been actively promoting—also showed encouraging numbers, helping to decongest road networks and reduce logistics costs for domestic trade.

The port is expected to continue investing in modernization projects, including deepening of channels, development of additional berths, and digital transformation initiatives, to handle larger vessels and offer faster turnaround times.

As the Indian economy continues to strengthen, ports like Cochin play a critical role in facilitating trade, supporting industries, and boosting regional development.
