It is anticipated that the capital dredging project at Beypore Port, which aims to deepen the current waterway and remove virgin material from the bottom to facilitate the passage of larger vessels, will be finished by February 2026.
The channel depth, which is currently 3.7 meters, would be raised to 5.50 meters following completion of the construction, which had previously been delayed because of rock formations, according to sources with the Kerala Maritime Board. In the future, they said, the depth might be gradually raised to 7.0 meters.
Officials claim that the project, which has been delayed for more than eight years, has already received ₹11.80 crore from the State government. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recently reviewed the project, which will proceed based on the report from the hydrographic survey wing.
The Harbour Engineering wing has provided the State government with a separate estimate of ₹82.80 crore to cover additional funding needs. Additionally, efforts are being made to incorporate the port’s development requirements within the Union government’s Sagarmala plan.
Vessel movement to Beypore Port has been hampered by insufficient draft, which is the vertical space between a ship’s waterline and bottom. The lengthy dredging project is another reason why the plan for a passenger ship service is still on hold.
