Additional Labour Commissioner K.M. Sunil has been assigned by Minister for Labour V. Sivankutty to carry out a thorough investigation into labor-related matters at the port of Vizhinjam.

Following Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s instructions, Mr. Sivankutty called a meeting here on Saturday, where the decision was made.

Trade unions’ accusations that headload workers were being turned away from the Vizjhinjam port prompted the meeting.

In locations that fell under the purview of Customs, the unions had insisted that measures be adopted to allow the headload workers to carry on with their current employment.

The group was told by the port administration that the headload workers will be given suitable jobs as the port’s second phase of expansion got underway.

According to the Kerala Headload Workers Act, the study would examine the job sectors and the workers who worked in them, as well as the total number of workers, the number of contractors they worked under, and whether any workers had lost their jobs in any area.

The Minister said Mr. Sunil would submit the study report within a month.

Till then, status quo would be maintained.

Labour Secretary K. Vasuki, Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd. Managing Director Divya S. Iyer, Mr. Sunil; Vizhinjam port authorities, and representatives of trade unions took part in the meeting.
